(A Synopsis of the Revelation of Jesus Christ)

The 7 bowl [vials] Judgments
Verses 12-16 Armageddon begins

Revelation 16:1

(1)  Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth."

The judgments of the trumpets and bowls follow a pattern. The first trumpet and the first bowl are judgments on the land. The second trumpet and the second bowl are judgments on the sea. Notice that the severity of the Bowl Judgments have increased in intensity and scope.

The first 5 Bowl Judgments

Revelation 16:2-11

(2)  So the first went and poured out his bowl upon the earth, and a foul and loathsome sore came upon the men who had the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.

(3)  Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became blood as of a dead man; and every living creature in the sea died.

(4)  Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood. (5)  And I heard the angel of the waters saying:

"You are righteous, O Lord,
The One who is and who was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
(6)  For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,
And You have given them blood to drink.
For it is their just due."

(7)  And I heard another from the altar saying, "Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.
Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. (9)  And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.

(10)  Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. (11)  They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.

Each of the angels has a specific "target" for the contents of his vial. The earth-dwellers have already suffered from the seal and trumpet judgments, but this final series of judgments will climax God's plan, leading to Babylon's fall and Jesus Christ's return to earth.

The First Bowl Judgment — PUTRID SORES
Foul — kakos (NT:2556)  Evil, disgusting, ugly, terrible, horrible, foul
Loathsome — poneros (NT:4190)  Diseased, painful, malignant
Sores — helkos (NT:1668)  Ulcer, wound
This same word is used
In Luke 16:21 "The dogs came and licked his sores."
In the Septuagint in reference to the boils that were brought upon the Egyptians in Exodus 9:9-12.
In the Septuagint in reference to the leprosy in Leviticus 13:18-20,23
Men — anthropos (NT:444)  "man-faced," a human beings
Universally, with reference to the genus or nature, without distinction of sex, a human being, whether male or female
With the article (to - the - as it is in this passage: toús anthroópous) it includes all human individuals
So everyone who has the mark of the beast and worships the image is covered with putrefying, painful, ulcerous boils. This was not just a passing plague, for we see in the 5th plague the sores are still there.

The Second Bowl Judgment — THE SEA TURNED TO BLOOD
In the 2nd Trumpet Judgment 1/3 of the sea became blood, and 1/3 of the sea creatures died, and 1/3 of the ships were destroyed. Here, in the 2nd Bowl Judgment we see that the entire sea becomes blood and every living creature in the sea dies as the wrath of God escalates in the final judgments.

Heaven gives justification for this terrible judgment: the earth-dwellers have shed the blood of God's people, so it is only right that they should perish drinking blood. In God's government, the punishment fits the crime.
Pharaoh tried to drown the Jewish boy babies, but it was his own army that eventually drowned in the Red Sea (Exodus 1:22 & 14:26-28).
Haman planned to hang Mordecai on the gallows and to exterminate the Jews; but he himself was hanged on the gallows, and his family was exterminated (Esther 7:10; 9:10).
King Saul refused to obey God and slay the Amalekites, so he was slain by an Amalekite (2 Samuel 1:1-16).
(from The Bible Exposition Commentary. Copyright © 1989 by Chariot Victor Publishing, and imprint of Cook Communication Ministries.)
In the 3rd Trumpet Judgment 1/3 of the rivers and springs were poisoned. Here, ALL fresh waters were turned to blood.
In Galatians 6:7 & 8 we are told: "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life."

The Fourth Bowl Judgment — SCORCHING HEAT
Here the word "men" is the same as in the First Bowl Judgment, indicating that everyone was scorched.
This judgment focused the intense heat of the sun on the earth, and with all water, both sea and fresh, turned to blood, there is no way to even quench thirst.
But even with all of this, mankind did not repent. Like Pharaoh who hardened his heart, so the people of the end time harden their hearts.
They had the ministry of the 144,000
They had the tempered judgments of God in the Seals and Trumpet Judgments
They had the angel from heaven to preach the everlasting gospel (Revelations 14:6)
Now the judgments are not tempered, but are poured out full strength and not only do they choose to harden their hearts, but the time of Grace has passed, and now they are incapable of repentance.

The Fifth Bowl Judgment — DARKNESS AND PAIN

In the 4th Trumpet Judgment 1/3 of the Sun, Moon, and Stars were darkened. Here again, the judgments are escalated as God pours out His final plagues and the kingdom of the beast is plunged into total darkness.
They gnawed their tongues
gnawed — massaomai (NT:3145) To chew, consume, eat, devour
So again, as with the 4th Bowl Judgment, mankind is so consumed with evil, that evil and blasphemy is all they are capable of. Not only do they choose not to repent, but the time of repentance has passed.

The 6th & 7th Bowl Judgments - Armageddon

Revelation 16:12-16

(12)  Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. (13)  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. (14)  For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

(15)  "Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame."

(16)  And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.

The Euphrates dried up
John Brown (John Brown's Outlines) points out:
1. The Euphrates is not only the site of the ancient Babel, it was the site of Nebucadnezzer’s Babylon.
2. It will also be the water supply for the modern Babylon!
a. America as well as the British have (over the last 20-30 years) helped develop extensive water supply, flood control, and hydro-electric power stations on the Euphrates!
b. It must be dried up in order to shut off the beast’s lights and water!
3. It is also interesting to note that Mt. Ararat which stands at an elevation of 17,000 ft., is the chief supply of the water for the Euphrates!
a. It is at about 15,000 ft. that explorers claim to have sighted the prow of the Ark protruding from the ice cap!
b, They have never been able to document this discovery scientifically because the summers that they have returned were not warm enough to melt the ice for another look!
(1) Maybe the Lord is waiting for this tribulation intense sun to use it as another testimony of the Truth!
(2) Whatever the reason, the Euphrates is dried up to make room for a flood of people that will invade Jerusalem!
Kings from the east
The Bible Knowledge Commentary points out that there has been endless speculation about "the kings from the East," with many expositors trying to relate them to some contemporary leaders of their generation. A survey of 100 commentaries of the Book of Revelation reveals at least 50 interpretations of the identity of the kings of the East.
More than likely it is referring to those nations east of the Euphrates, either Arabic or Asian nations, or both.
Unclean spirits like frogs
In his vision, these unclean spirits looked like frogs to John.
One came from the dragon Satan
One came from the beast Antichrist (the beast from the sea - the 1st beast)
One came from the false prophet The beast from the earth (the 2nd beast)
Here we are given the interpretation of this part of the vision. These may look like men with miracle-working powers and abilities to those on earth, but God sees them as they are: demons.
Their purpose is to convince the rest of the nations of the world to join the "kings from the east" in their battle against Israel.
We see an example of this in 1 Kings 22:19-35 when God was speaking to those in heaven regarding King Ahab, to convince him to come to Ramoth Gilead to die in battle there:

And the Lord said, 'Who will persuade Ahab to go up, that he may fall at Ramoth Gilead?' ...

Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, and said, 'I will persuade him.'
The Lord said to him, 'In what way?'
So he said, 'I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.'
And the Lord said, 'You shall persuade him, and also prevail. Go out and do so.'
...  So the king of Israel ... went up to Ramoth Gilead.... Now a certain man drew a bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor. ... The battle increased that day; and the king was propped up in his chariot, facing the Syrians, and died at evening.
The kings of the earth drawn to the battle
Here is one theory on which nations are referred to.
1. The ten-kingdom federation of nations under the reign of the Beast. (The 10 horns of Rev 13:1-10)
2. The northern federation composed from Ezekiel 38 & 39; Isaiah 10:12:
Gog Russia
Persia Iran
Gomer Germany
Togarmah Turkey
3. The kings of the East, which are the Arabic and Asiatic peoples from beyond the Euphrates.
4. The kings of the South from Ezekiel 38 & Isaiah 10:12:
North African power or powers. (Dan 11:40)
He comes as a thief
He interjects a warning (or instruction) to the believers of all timeBe Ready, no matter what!
Be Pure and Clean, no matter what!

1 Thessalonians 5:4-10
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Matthew 24:37-44
But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

2 Peter 3:10-15
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.

A place called in Hebrew Armageddon
The name Armageddon comes from two Hebrew words,
har a mountain or range of hills
megiddown place of troops or place of slaughter
Har Megiddo, the hill of Megiddo. It is also called the Plain of Esdraelon and the Valley of Jezreel. The area is about fourteen miles wide and twenty miles long, and forms what Napoleon called "the most natural battlefield of the whole earth." Standing on Mount Carmel and overlooking that great plain, you can well understand why it would be used for gathering the armies of the nations.
It was on this plain that
Barak defeated the armies of Canaan (Judges 5:19)
Gideon met the Midianites there (Judges 7)
King Saul lost his life (1 Samuel 31)
Titus and the Roman army used this natural corridor, as did the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. British General Allenby used it when he defeated the Turkish armies in 1917.
(from The Bible Exposition Commentary. Copyright © 1989 by Chariot Victor Publishing, and imprint of Cook Communication Ministries.)
Mount of Megiddo on the south side of the valley of Megiddo or Esdraelon southwest of Mount Carmel (2 Chronicles 35:22; Zechariah 12:11). Megiddo was the capital of a portion of Canaan that was given to Joshua (Joshua 12:21; 17:11; Judges 1:27). It is at the entrance to a pass across the Carmel mountain range, on the main highway between Asia and Africa, and is the key position between Euphrates and the Nile. It has been the battlefield of many peoples throughout the ages. Thothmes III, the founder of the old Egyptian Empire, said, "Megiddo is worth a thousand cities".
(from Dake Annotated Reference Bible © 2007 by Dake Publishing..)
Megiddo is in a region frequently associated with decisive battles:
Deborah over Sisera (Judges 5:19);
Gideon over the Midianites (Judges 7);
Pharaoh over Josiah (2 Kings 23:29; 2 Chronicles 35:22).
The vast Valley of Megiddo has seen tremendous battles through the centuries. Over 200 battles have been fought in the region, from 1468 BC (with Pharaoh Tuthmosis III) to 1917 (with Lord Allenby of the British). (from David Gluzik Study Guide

The war scene, which we call Armageddon
1. A further description of this gathering of the host of the antichrist into the winepress, and the treading of it by the King of kings, and Lord of lords, is given in chapter 19.
2.  It is in reality a war scene, the gathering of armies, the bringing together of the kings of the earth and of the whole world to the battle of the great day of God Almighty.
3.  It is for military purposes that they come, seduced, drawn, and impelled by unclean spirits that issue out of the mouth of the Dragon, through the mouth of the Beast, and false Prophet.
4. The region of their assembly is the Holy Land.

You know the outcome, but let's look deeper
1. The root of the conflict between Israel and the Arab states is because of Ishmael, Esau. This hatred has gone on for thousands of years, with not an end in sight. Read. Psalms 83

Psalms 83:3-8
Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people, and consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, "Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more."

For they have consulted together with one consent; they form a confederacy against You: The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites; Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assyria also has joined with them; they have helped the children of Lot.

2. During the Six-Day War with Israel, this phrase from Psalms 83 became the rallying cry of the Arab nations seeking to destroy this tiny nation of Israel from off the earth.
3. Now let’s look at the future of these Arab states:
a. Lebanon – In the Millennial time we find that the boundaries of Israel according to Ezekiel 47:13-48:29 will occupy and possess ALL of Lebanon, so there will no longer be a Lebanon.
b. Edom – Southern Jordan – will become a perpetual desolation because of Esau according to Ezekiel 35:6-9, and Jeremiah 49:7-13, there will no longer be a Jordan, as we know it.
c. Moab – Central Jordan – Destruction will come (Jeremiah 48:1-46) but it will not be total. According to Jeremiah 48:47, a remnant will survive and repent. So there will be a nation called Moab in the Messianic Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
d. Ammon – Northern Jordan – We find that peace will come between Israel and Ammon by means of a partial destruction, followed by the conversion of the remnant according to (Jeremiah 49:6). This will mean that during the Millennial Kingdom of Jesus there will be a nation called Ammon.
e. Egypt – By the means of destruction and later by conversion there will be peace between Israel and Egypt according to (Isaiah 19:1-10). In fact an altar will be set up in the land of Egypt as a sign and witness of the power of the God of Israel.
f. Assyria – Northern Iraq – Peace will come between the nation of Israel and Assyria by means of conversion according to Isaiah 19:23-25, which describes a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, which is the ancient Via Maris, which ran through Israel. The thought of a highway is a symbol of economy. So not only the Egyptians but also the Assyrians will worship the God of Israel.
g. Kedar & Hazor – Saudi Arabia – We find peace will come between Israel and Saudi Arabia by the means of destruction according to Jeremiah 49:28-33, which shows the total devastation of Saudi Arabia by war. So during the Millennial Kingdom of Jesus we find that the inhabitants will be scattered and dispersed worldwide for the entire duration of this period. In fact it will be a perpetual desolation, a dwelling place of jackals, No man will dwell there.
h. Elam – Persia or Iran – Although Persia or Iran is ancient Elam and it is not an Arab state, even though they share the same religion, which is Islam. The future of Iran is foretold in the Scriptures. We find that peace will come between Israel and Elam by the means of destruction, dispersion and then a conversion, which will be followed by their return to their land according to Jeremiah 49:34-39. So as a result of this destruction the people of Iran will be scattered worldwide, however according to Jeremiah 49:39 we see that the destruction will only be partial and their dispersion temporary, but the time of their dispersion is not revealed in the Word of God. (Lichtenstein)

Revelation 16:17-21

(17)  Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "It is done!"  (18)  And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.  (19)  Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.  (20)  Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.  (21)  And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

The Seventh Bowl Judgment — THE EARTH SHAKEN

In Ezekiel 38:19 a great shaking will come into the land of Israel, and according to Ezekiel 38:21 every man sword will be against his brother, and in Ezekiel 38:22 we see an overflowing rain with great hailstones, and fire, and brimstone cast upon the enemy. In Ezekiel 38:20 we find the mountains being thrown down, and steep places shall fall with every wall falling. And in Revelation 19:15 we see the sharp sword from His mouth will smite the nations.

Ezekiel 38:19-23
For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: 'Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel, so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.' I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains," says the Lord God. "Every man's sword will be against his brother. And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord."'

Now you know what happens at Armageddon. (Paul the Learner)

The Great City
The ‘great city’  is probably Jerusalem (see Revelation 11:8). The Prophet Zechariah prophesied an earthquake that would change the topography of Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4). But the key idea here is that Babylon would fall (see Jeremiah 50-51). ‘The beasts’ great economic system, which subjugated the people of the world, would be completely destroyed by God.

Revelation 11:8
And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Zechariah 14:4
And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.

Jeremiah 50:9
For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country, and they shall array themselves against her; from there she shall be captured. Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;  none shall return in vain.

The configuration of the earth is changed
Interlinked with the rest of the effects worked by these convulsions of an ending world, the configuration of the earth is changed. John beheld: ‘And every island fled, and mountains were not found.’ He does not say that islands ceased to be, or no mountains are to remain or exist afterward; but that there is to be a sudden recession of the islands from their present places, and that some mountains that now are shall entirely disappear. In other words, great portions of the earth as it now stands will be quite altered in their positions and relations. The earth itself is not annihilated.

There is a ranking order in the process of this judgment
1. Jerusalem is smitten, but only partially destroyed, because something of the sacred is there.
2. The Gentile cities, which stand deeper down in moral character, are entirely destroyed.
3. Great Babylon is now made to drink the bitterest draught of all, because she is the source and center of the prevailing abominations.

When will all of this happen?
In the late 1600’s Matthew Poole wrote a commentary on the Bible. It’s interesting to read his take on this passage: “When this shall be God alone knows. I think, and experience hath proved, that they were much too hasty in their speculations, that prophesied it should be in the year 1656, or 1660, or 1666. For my own part, I do not believe it will be before 1866, or betwixt that and the year 1900.” (David Guzik)
The apostle Paul was expecting the end to come soon when he wrote:

1 Corinthians 7:29-31
What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.

It is a fact that most people interpret Bible prophecy through the experiences of their geographical or generational positions. People from one country can talk about a future persecution while those in another country are giving their lives for their faith. The primary thing is to keep our spiritual garments clean and look for His coming daily as he instructed us to do.

Satan's Entire System Is Now About To Be Judged By God
1. His religious system will be judged (the harlot, Revelation 17)
2. His political and economic system will be judged (Babylon, Revelation 18)
3. His military system will be judged (the armies of Armageddon, in Revelation 19)
